The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Judy Kaye
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Nice Work If You Can Get It
"Last night I knew I wasn’t sleeping terribly well and I didn’t know why. I was very restless. And [this morning] when I turned on the TV, I went, “Oh, of course, of course!” I’d forgotten! There was Kristin Chenoweth, and I went, “Oh my God, oh my God…” I feel like Broadway has given me a great big hug. It’s wonderful. This is my fourth nomination, and I think it means I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing! It’s a great pat on the back, and amazing to me, because [Estonia Dulworth] is such a fun role. The response, not only to the show, but to me personally, has been something that was totally unexpected to me. That’s the way this business is—the phone rings and suddenly your life changes. Frankly, I wish there was a category for Best Ensemble in the Tonys, because the entire group of people in this show…It’s like a Swiss clock, you know? Everybody’s working together. Right now, I’m on my way to my accountant’s [laughs]. But I’m gonna do the show tonight, that’s how I’m gonna celebrate. I know Stanley Wayne Mathis will have baked something, so there will be some baked goods sitting there, which I’ll have to fight not to eat...not too much of them, anyway!"
